Morris Robinson

Morris Robinson who will make his LA Opera debut as Sarastro in Die Zauberflote and return as Fasolt in Das Rheingold, is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most interesting and sought after basses of his generation.

During the 2007/08 season, Mr. Robinson makes his debuts at the Washington National Opera as Commendatore in Don Giovanni, the Pittsburgh Opera as Ramfis in Aida, and Opera Pacific as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte He also appears in concert with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Sao Paolo Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra. This past summer he made his debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in performances of the Mozart Requiem that closed the annual festival, and returned to the Cincinnati May Festival for Rossini's Stabat Mater and as Ferrando in a concert version of Il Trovatore.

A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Mr. Robinson made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2002 in their production of Fidelio. He has since appeared there as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (both in the original production and in a new children's English version), the King in Aida, and in roles in Nabucco, Tannhäuser, and the new productions of Les Troyens and Salome. Other past opera engagements have included Ramfis and Sparafucile in Rigoletto at the Florida Grand Opera, the King at the Opera Company of Philadelphia; Sparafucile,the Blind Ballad Singer in Gloriana, and Pluto in Hippolytus and Aricia at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis; Commendatore in Don Giovanni, the Bonze in Madama Butterfly, and the King at the Boston Lyric Opera; the Bonze at the Seattle Opera; and Un Songe in Dardanus at the Wolf Trap Opera.

Mr. Robinson recently made his debuts at the Tanglewood Festival as Commendatore in a concert version of Don Giovanni with James Levine, the Cincinnati May Festival as Osmin in a concert performance of Die Entführung aus dem Serail with James Conlon, and the Verbier Festival in a concert version of Simon Boccanegra with Levine. He also recently made his recital debuts at Spivey Hall in Atlanta and at the Savannah Music Festival. Other concert engagements have included Verdi's Requiem with the Chicago Symphony, the Ft. Worth Symphony, and at Carnegie Hall and the Aspen Music Festival; Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Baltimore Symphony and National Symphony Orchestra (at Wolf Trap), Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14 with the New England String Ensemble in Boston's Jordan Hall, and Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah with the New Choral Society of Central Westchester. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Ensemble in a performance of Stravinsky's Renard.

Mr. Robinson's first album, Going Home, was released in February 2007 on the Decca label.

An Atlanta native, Mr. Robinson is a graduate of The Citadel and received his musical training from the Boston University Opera Institute.
